We are seeking a Safety Engineer with a background in Department of Defense (DoD) systems and software safety to support the design, development, and deployment of mission-critical systems. This role requires an understanding of DoD standards and a collaborative approach to ensure all safety and risk requirements are met throughout the lifecycle of complex projects. The Safety Engineer II/III will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to perform system hazard analyses, software safety assessments, and risk mitigation strategies, with a focus on ensuring operational safety and compliance with military safety standards.
*This is a 3+ month contract or 1099 role.
Job duties:
- Conduct hazard analyses for both hardware and software systems in accordance with MIL-STD-882E and other relevant DoD safety standards.
- Assess software safety and cybersecurity interfaces to ensure comprehensive risk management in embedded and real-time systems.
- Review design documentation, specifications, and test results to verify compliance with safety requirements.
- Lead or support the development and implementation of safety verification and validation plans across the system lifecycle.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including systems engineering, software engineering, and program management, to identify and mitigate safety risks.
- Participate in System Safety Working Groups (SSWG) and interface with government and contractor teams to support program safety requirements.
- Prepare safety documentation, such as System Safety Program Plans (SSPPs) and Hazard Tracking System (HTS) reports.
- Support safety audits, technical reviews, and safety assessments as part of contract compliance and risk management.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 3+ years (Level II) or 5+ years (Level III) of experience in safety engineering, with a focus on DOD programs.
- Strong knowledge of DOD safety standards (MIL-STD-882) and familiarity with software safety processes.
- Proven experience with safety analysis techniques, such as FMEA, FTA, and HAZOP.
- Active Secret clearance
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and software safety tools.
- Certifications in safety engineering or systems safety are a plus (e.g., CSP, CSEP).
- Hands-on experience in developing and maintaining complex requirement traceability matrices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in the context of verification and validation processes.
- Experience with risk management practices and tools.
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment, managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
We provide a competitive pay and benefits package. This position is offering a salary range of $90,000 to $150,000.
